Brief: To develop a modular digital dimmer housing for use within the film, theatre, television and associated industries. The programme had to include the development of the critical air-cooling system and electrical connector details allowing for the full range of modular configurations and power use.

Process: The key elements of the modular system were arranged to provide a practical ergonomic layout. IDC evaluated and tested a variety of forced air-cooling systems and connector technologies. A working test rig was built including the “plug in” dimmer control modules.

The design of the overall housing, dimmer modules including the essential electrical connector details were completed. A fully working prototype was produced using a combination of traditional and rapid prototyping technologies including SLAs and vacuum castings. The main housing was produced in sheet metal with machined, fabricated and aluminium cast details.

IDC assisted in sourcing and selection of suitable suppliers and manufacturers.

Achievement: IDC created an attractive, ergonomic, functional dimmer rack housing that has proved to be a milestone in this area of technology. The product enjoys continued success.
